Mid-week Update

As it stood on Tuesday when I posted my "whining" fit; things were looking a bit dreary. While I'm not completely out of the fog at the moment, things are looking a bit better. Some events that occurred between Tuesday, and today gave me a bit more juice to run on.

One thing that I can say has helped is that I've had the opportunity to start playing hockey again, not in ice form, but roller form. I prefer ice hockey, but the closest ice hockey arena is at least an hour away. I want to play on a regular basis, and roller hockey is just as good. I'm waiting with anticipation for my new helmet, gloves, and sticks to arrive.

All my old ice hockey equipment is likely dry-rotted by now, so I used that excuse to get some new things.

Anyway, a few days ago I bought a big sack of basmati rice to go with the roti flat-bread that I made, and I thought of a drawing idea. I'm cartoonist friends with Katie Rice, and I'm also a huge fan of her work so I thought, "What if Katie Rice had her own brand of rice?". This is the product of that thought:

As M.R. Darbyshire stated, "I hope this doesn't bring back repressed memories from her school days.". Hopefully she just likes it!

Boy, it's been a rough couple of days. I'd rather not go into details about it, so I won't, needless to say, I feel like a horse's patoot. I am just hoping for a good turn of events that will make me feel better about things.

Despite all this stress, and useless negativity, I've continued drawing things for the gift application and also managed to slap some of the better designs onto a few shirts in my store.

I also designed a logo for Off-Air with Roche and Whitney on DC101.com. A very amusing podcast starring two of the most colorful radio personalities around. Check it out! Unfortunately, I can't show you the logo yet because they haven't placed it on the main site, but it'll be there soon.

That is pretty much it for now, I think I'm going to go smash my head through some drywall.

Hey, so I discovered a way to create my own gift application on facebook. I know everyone hates these applications, but I figured I might be able to curb that hate with fun, and amusing drawings. So I did it. Success? Well that is yet to be seen.

So far I have eleven gifts that you can send out to everyone, I think you start out with like four or five unlocked. For every sent gift accepted you unlock a new gift from the gift box.

Alright everyone, it is time to fess up and admit something..................

I watch Hell's Kitchen. I don't watch much tv, and normally I despise reality tv shows but because I enjoy cooking, and I find it amusing when Chef Ramsey goes ape-shit, I watch the show. Last night was no exception, but I did try something new while I was watching. I drew caricatures of two of the contestants on the men's team that have a solid chance of being one of the two left at the end. It should be noted that I rarily ever do caricatures, it is uncharted territory for me so I find it challenging. But when you're trying to get better at drawing you always have to challenge yourself.

Giovanni from around the fourth episode, up until the middle of last nights suddenly had a case of flat-hair. Then suddenly after he got switched to the Girl's Team his hair sprang back up like it was in the first couple of episodes. Being around all of those women must have caused some kind of erectile reaction with his hair follicles. Next week maybe I'll draw him again, this time with his erect hair.

Robert on the other hand has always had spiky hair and it has never gone flat on him. Chef Ramsey likes to rib on this guy for being large, but he can cook his way around the kitchen. You'd expect him to know what tastes good; it is obvious that he likes to eat.

I look to see one of these men left standing at the end of the show against one of the ladies. We shall see!

Next week I'll attempt to caricature the women, and redo Giovanni with his rediscovered spiky hair.

When I was little I went through a stage where I liked sleeping in my underwear, I use to wear white-tighties to be exact. Pretty embarassing stuff, but for some reason at the time it didn't strike me as rude, or bad manners to then wake up in my underwear and continue on through the morning eating breakfast, and watching cartoons before I actually put pants on.

One day, my sister told me she had a dream about me. In the dream, I was retarded and in my underwear. Everyone was gathered around me excited as I was attempting to write out my name. My sister said when I finally finished everyone had to make a fake big deal about it, and I only managed to write three letters, "Coo". I couldn't even hit all the letters in my name, I stopped at three and the third letter was wrong. Terrible.

After she had told me about the dream, I never walked around in my underwear again.

Why am I telling you this? Because my sister's birthday is March 9th, and I made her a card with that dream in mind. It has been an ongoing joke that we laugh about to this day.

Bugs Construction

Because I am a glutton for punishment I started on an old Bugs Bunny comic cover from JohnK's blog. I may go ahead and construct the bear also, but my main focus now is to really understand the masses used to construct Bugs. In doing so, I noticed my perspective lines were off on Bug's face, and adjusted them accordingly.

In regards to the older construction posts, I honestly could care less if people think I trace these, I am doing it for my benefit and to strengthen my abilities. I will continue these studies and post them here for reference when I need to go back and check over past mistakes. Hopefully I get some time to post some personal work too.

Good luck to everyone doing these studies, don't stop. They do help.

Update: Alright, finally finished this .. including the bear in the background. As you can see on the comparison my shapes were a bit off, including the grass in the background. Overall, it turned out okay.

Constructing Porky

Alright, this is the step by step sequence I use when I construct characters. This is exactly how I handled Tom in my previous post. It was not traced. This drawing of Porky is not perfect, but it turned out alright. I will not defend myself further as I feel that this should defuse most of the doubts any of you have.

Note: If you're wondering about the cut-off fly swatter, and why I didn't draw the other characters. The fly swatter is cut off because I made the canvas area wide enough to construct the major parts on Porky, and it ended up being a little too short for the top right of the fly swatter. As for the other characters, I do not have time right now, and will save them for another day.

As John said, the more of these you complete the more it will help you. I know it helps me a lot.

JohnK: Tom Construction Exercise

Edit: I did not trace this, I barely have any free time as it is right now to do any kind of drawing practice, so I wouldn't have wasted my time tracing this.

I added a Daffy Duck construction drawing I did. I used steps to show how I do it, this is how I constructed Tom. It is from a previous post.

I know this is extremely late, and probably not worth posting but I will anyway because Katie Rice called me out on not typing up a New Year's resolution list. I didn't type one up, but I have it all stored in my brain. Perhaps having it on my blog will be a friendly reminder to myself?

My resolution list spreads into different aspects of my life, and I won't reveal all of them but I will reveal the more generic resolutions. Anyway, here we go:

RESOLUTIONS

1.) Get better at drawing; this has been on my list since 2005 and I've stayed true to it every year and I do not plan to stop.

2.) Get better at understanding the ins and outs of various positions in a cartoon studio (IE - Storyboard Artist/Lay-out Artist, Character Design)

3.) Get out more. I'm a loner, most people know this. I am perfectly content with staying in my computer room drawing, but I've found when you don't get out enough you actually lose some creativity because you don't have any experiences, or see any new people to initiate the process in your brain.

4.) Be more positive about everything. Being pessimistic does nothing but drag you down. Pessimism guarantees that the crappy outcomes you predict will come true!

5.) Actually work on my own project for once. I haven't done much of anything with any of my projects in a long time.

6.) Let myself have more fun, and relax.

That pretty much sums my resolution list up; the rest of it I will not divulge because it is personal and boring. Here is a very late screenshot of the Christmas card we sent out this year, I had to rush through it and it shows but it turned out okay!

Hey kids, thought I'd take some time away from my tablet and update the blog once more. I've been getting a lot of Christmas Card cover art requests on top of illustration and animation work that I am doing for JPL Productions, so I've been fairly busy, but there is always room for more paying work and I'm always on the look out!

I am hoping to be caught up next week so that I can go fishing with my dad, but right now I don't think it is going to happen. At least I have the early spring fishing trip to look forward to!

Below is the most recent Christmas Card piece that I've finished. I tried some new painting techniques in Photoshop for the background, and I think I am going to continue to do backgrounds that way. This background has some issues, but is far more interesting than anything I could throw together in Flash, or Illustrator. My goal was to make it seem like it was made with traditional media, and it almost got there. Next time it'll be even better.

Also the cat that is jumping on the right was supposed to be spraying pee at the dude on the couch, but I had to take it out because apparently some important people will be getting this card. Now the cat is jumping oddly, or maybe presenting his butthole. You choose.

I've been spending the last few days working on my JPL project stuff, and it has been coming along smoothly. Hopefully I'll be able to share some of that with you all soon. I also finished a Christmas Card over the weekend for friends of mine, and their two daughters. I posted it here, but it can also be found in my portfolio, blogger sometimes takes away the ability to see the image at full size, and since I'm not feeling up to doing the html, check out the portfolio.

Between all of that I managed to do some construction practice using an old daffy duck model sheet. I try to squeeze some practice in their when I have time. Practice makes perfect.

Neglection makes the heart grow fonder..

Okay, maybe not. I haven't posted in a while. One might say I have neglected my blog site. As most of you know, I have been very busy working on The George Liquor Program with JohnK, and I have recently started another fairly large project with JPL Productions. I'll be doing illustration and animation work for them, which I am very excited about.

I'll of course be able to go into greater detail about that once I get permission to do so. As far as personal work goes, I am always doodling, sketching, studying the classics, and of course following John's site for new guidance on bettering myself as a cartoonist. That in itself is a goal that will likely last a lifetime. I also redesigned my portfolio site, the older design was far too complicated and honestly it wasn't very fun.

I know, some of you may be wondering where the heck The George Liquor Program is? Unfortunately things have been delayed, but with the extra time we've gained, it will allow us to better this pilot episode even more. That is exactly what we are doing now behind the scenes. I can't really give you exact dates, in fact, your best bet is to check in on JohnK's website every so often as I'm sure he will announce it when the time comes.

For now, I'll leave you with some of my work from the show and a couple of personal drawings to look at. Hopefully I can keep this site rolling a little better than I have in the past.. how many months has it been? Anyway, enjoy!

Here are the same drawings from yesterday, John advised that I read his post about varying lineweight on the face in proper areas, so I did and applied what I learned to all thirteen of my inks. The following are updated versions of what I posted yesterday.

Also on several there were very uniquely draw pupils which I missed entirely, thank you Kali for pointing that out. I made sure I got them right!

Here are several of the revised drawings I did for JohnK, after he took a peek at my drawings and cried for several hours he was able to give me some critiques which I used on the following drawings. On all of my inks I make sure I draw the entire body, head and other pieces separate so that the Flash animators don't go insane and send me hate mail.

Junior Bacon Cheeseburger

Welp, another week down the tubes and a few more drawings to post here on the site. I decided to have another hack at Junior from Pint-Sized Pygmy since he initially gave me trouble the first time I did him. This time it I drew him from the side. It turned out better than I thought it would, but he didn't come out unscathed, see my notes and you'll see.

Also I drew up some more concept art for my "idea", this time it is of a supporting female character. She turned out half-decent, I'll be inking her once I get done my client work!

Besides doing actual client-work I've done a few practice drawings in the past couple of days, and figured I would post them once they've accumulated. Anyway, we've got Tweety, Junior, and Pint-Size Pygmy all of which I did okay with but will definitely require a second look to actually learn more from it.

Out of all of them I'd have to say Junior was the most challenging, I think the combination of the different shapes and also the secondary shapes in the clothes really created a challenge.

Challenge is good.

Last night Eric Bauza and I were talking about our favorite 80's cartoons and their action figures. We both agreed that The Real Ghost Busters toys were the best, ugly drawings and animation aside some of these toys were just freakin' hilarious and awesome. We also mourned his Stay Puft Marshmallow man whom he sold at a yard sale a long time ago. Good times.

Samurai Slowdown!

Haven't posted anything for a few days (I know, I know. I'm sorry!), so I figured I'd post up a few drawings I've done between posts. First of all, I'm working on a personal project that I really don't want to get into too much detail about because I change my mind a lot, and its really annoying to everyone but myself. Below is some concept art from that project, and NO the boy did not wet the bed though it is pretty funny to imagine that he did.

Then comes the annoying drawing practice pictures, yes I know they are boring but I need to do it because I need to get better. We've got Costello Cat, and George the ... I have no idea what he is.. but I'm going to guess he is a bear, possibly a dog of some sort since his ears are floppy.

Anyway both were pretty terrible but not atrocious, and are yet two more lessons learned. Fin.

The practice continued today as I worked again with Jerry from Tom and Jerry. Here we find Jerry with his hands behind his back, most likely wielding a blunt object to either smash Tom in the face with, or smash his fingers. It is hard to say.

He could also be itching his butt, I'll leave that for you to decide. Lots of errors in this one, but hey practice makes perfect. And well, no one will ever be perfect so I guess I'll always be practicing. I really have to pee. BYE

I realize now that the last post I made of Jerry really didn't show that I was truly practicing construction, but I assure you. I am always practicing construction, to the point that it could probably be declared an obsession.

Anyway, I just wanted to show the two people that regularly check my webpage what I do to help me get better or attempt to get better at drawing, and construction. Important stuff.

Anyway, here is Jerry in his normal environment. No floppy muzzles, no fighter pilot helmets, no machine gun butts. Just plain ol' Jerry. I got close, but .. no cigar on this one. Comes with the territory, but I'll try again and use what I've learned from this one. No angst here. Gggghhhh...

Sorry there really wasn't any cereal in this post. I'm a freakin' let down.
